Big news this month is Newsweek’s cover story on Michele Obama’s Let’s Move campaign and its linkage to Fuel Up to Play 60 in the fight against childhood obesity, as well as the Earth Day/Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report from the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy. Yogurt and pizza cheese sales are gaining momentum with new product offerings that have changed consumer eating habits. And as the outcome of extensive research by DMI and its partners, the Dairy Department is changing its look to create greater engagement with consumers, translating into double-digit sales gains and increased retailer profitability per square foot.

For Midwest farm families, state fairs are much more than the fun rides and food on a stick! We are excited to let you know the Butter-Fy Yourself Facebook application, designed to bring a popular state fair tradition – butter sculpting – to life, is now live. More than 70 people attended the annual meeting for the Midwest Dairy Foods Research Center on July 27. The Jackrabbit Dairy Council, a University/Industry partnership, will create qualified Dairy Science graduates at South Dakota State University through a state-of-the-art educational dairy plant. As students looked forward to summer vacation, First Lady Michelle Obama -introduced “Let?s Read. Let?s Move.”, another part of her anti-obesity campaign. According to the Let's Move campaign and several other health authorities, children and adolescents should consume 2 to 3 cups of low-fat or fat-free milk each day to support critical bone growth and development.

A copy of “How to Build a Healthy Kid,” the back-to-school guidebook developed by Newsweek, is being sent to the 60,000 schools taking part in Fuel Up to Play 60. The news is buzzing about chocolate milk and many parents don’t have all the information to make the right choices for their children. Midwest Dairy’s “Keep it Farm Fresh” fall retail promotion kicked off in September and will continue to roll out through early November at fourteen participating retailers across ten states. Butter-Fy Yourself! By the Numbers Midwest Dairy’s Facebook application, Butter-Fy Yourself, which launched in time for state fairs across the region, has now recorded more than 12,000 visits, and more than 3,000 wall posts have been created using it. Researchers at Midwest Dairy Foods Research Center have developed a new membrane-based process to isolate a-lactalbuimin from whey or milk that fractionates whey into two valuable products.
