The Hellstern Middle School Fuel Up to Play 60 student team is engaged and making a healthy difference in their school and community. GREAT JOB!

More than 900 students at Hellstern Middle School in Springdale, Arkansas learned the definition of “engaged” at a recent Fuel Up to Play 60 state championship assembly. Scott Bull, former Arkansas Razorback football player and former NFL San Francisco 49’ers quarterback, asked the students about their “buzz words” of the decade. He encouraged them to make “engaged” the new buzz word… but warned them this does not mean they go home and tell their parents that Scott Bull told them to go out and get married. After the laughter subsided, he went on to say that engaged means to get involved, to care about the results of a team’s efforts, and to offer your support.

Empowering students to lead the efforts in their school for healthy changes is a powerful message that Fuel Up to Play 60 has successfully sent to thousands of kids. Kids are using the tools and resources of Fuel Up to Play 60 and making a healthy difference for themselves and for their fellow students at their schools.

The Hellstern Fuel Up to Play 60 student team has promoted the importance of breakfast to the entire school with great success. Breakfast equals achievement as research shows a good breakfast leads to better academic performance and participation. The team also implemented after school activity clubs. Additionally, the school is in the process of partnering with other businesses and former Olympians to build a Fuel Up to Play 60 Fitness Park that will include a full-size running track.

Do these changes sound like something you want to see at your school? Encourage your local schools to enroll in Fuel Up to Play 60 for the 2010-11 school year and form a student team that can engage a school and community to promote healthy lifestyles.
