Thirsty Cows and the Importance of Water « Back

Head down in a water tank, the cows at Anglin Dairy always have easy access to fresh water.
Do you ever think about what would happen if you did not have easy access to water? Water is a basic nutrient for all of us. Dairy farmers care for their cows by providing clean water in plentiful supply. An average size dairy cow will drink a bathtub full of water every day, but when the temperature is between 80 - 90 degrees with the humidity ranging from 50 - 90 percent, dairy cows will drink up to 50 percent more water.
Quality water is essential to every dairy farm because water is the primary nutrient needed to make milk. Our cows have continual access to water in the feed barn, pastures and shade areas. Water quality on our farm is tested yearly by the Arkansas Department of Health to assure good quality water.
Living and working on the dairy farm has definitely increased my awareness of how important water is for our dairy cows every day and in extreme weather conditions. Although we can not prevent mechanical problems with our well pump or unexpected electrical power outages, we do have an emergency plan of how we can haul water to our dairy cows if necessary. Since the temperatures have been above 100 degrees for the past couple of weeks, we have been on high alert to check water tanks and make sure the cows have adequate amounts and access to water. It is important to be vigilant about checking our water system and work quickly to correct any problem. Our commitment to providing high quality milk begins with taking good care of our cows!
