New Year’s brings resolutions. If you are like many, you may want to lose those “extra pounds.” Some consumers look to weight loss companies like Nutrisystem or Weight Watchers to assist them in these efforts. If you read their websites, protein is a big focus for 2012. Are higher protein diets beneficial? According to wheyforyou.com, research suggests diets higher in protein, including high-quality whey protein, may contribute to satiety, a feeling of fullness, for a longer period of time after eating.

What is whey protein? Whey protein is a high-quality protein naturally found in milk. It has a high biological value, which means it is easy to digest and is efficiently used by the human body. Regular consumption of whey protein, in combination with a weight training program, may also increase lean muscle over time in healthy, young individuals.

How is it made? Just like Little Miss Muffett had curds and whey, whey protein is a co-product of the cheesemaking process. After curds are formed, the remaining liquid is concentrated through membrane filters, similar to home water softening systems. Water is flushed through the membranes to help separate and concentrate the protein to 90+ percent protein. Whey protein is dried and sold as a powder or added to beverages, foods and snacks. So perhaps whey protein just might be a helpful addition to your diet to accomplish your goals in 2012.
