Dairy Youth Communications Workshop to be Held on June 4

High school or college age students with a passion for dairy and an interest in improving their communications skills are invited to participate in the 2019 Dairy Youth Communications Workshop on Tuesday, June 4, at Northeast Iowa Food Bank, 1605 Lafayette, Waterloo, Iowa.

Several top-notch speakers will be featured at the workshop. The communications training will be led by Theresa Reps, Agricultural Affairs Manager for Midwest Dairy, and speakers will include Kirsten Juhl, Attorney at Redfern, Mason, Larsen & Moore, PLC, and Ally Crutcher, Anchor at KWWL television. In addition, a representative of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank will speak and attendees will participate in a volunteer activity.

The communications training program will include strategies and tips for successful communications including media interviews, presentations, and social media outreach. Participants will have opportunities to practice and brainstorm with each other on how to answer difficult questions and best share their dairy story.

The workshop is free and includes lunch and refreshments. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m., with the workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A volunteer activity at the food bank will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The Iowa Dairy Princess is crowned each year at the Iowa State Fairgrounds the night before the State Fair begins.  The 2019-20 state contest will be held August 6-7, 2019, in Ankeny with the coronation on August 7.  Applications will be due July 1, 2019.
