Scholarships

Midwest Dairy Association offers scholarships to students who are from dairy farms or studying in dairy-related majors. Scholarship eligibility and awards vary by state. In addition, Dairy Management Inc. offers checkoff-funded scholarships at the national level. Scholarships which are currently in the application phase are listed below.  Scholarships will be added as the year progresses. Check back to this site for your state if it is not listed; most Midwest Dairy Association scholarships are due on March 1.

Illinois Division Scholarships

The Illinois Division of Midwest Dairy Association provides educational awards of $1,000. Applicants who qualify include any Illinois producer who funds Midwest Dairy Association, the producer’s spouse, or the producer’s children, or the producer’s grandchildren. The producer must have an active dairy operation with checkoff funding directed to Midwest Dairy Association as of January 1st of the year the scholarship is awarded. These awards apply to any college major or degree, and there are no limitations on the length of the program (i.e. one, two or four year program). However, an applicant must be considered a full-time student at an accredited college. These awards will be sent directly to each recipient. Eligibility includes one award per family per year. A former applicant or scholarship winner can reapply in subsequent years, providing they remain eligible.

The application deadline for 2017 scholarships is March 1, 2017.

Iowa Division Scholarships

The Iowa Division of Midwest Dairy Association will be awarding 20 $1,000 educational awards. Applicants who qualify include any producer who funds Midwest Dairy Association, the producer’s spouse, the producer’s children or grandchildren. The producer must have an active dairy operation as of January 1st of the year the scholarship will be awarded. The producer must reside in Iowa. Please contact us if you need to verify these qualifications.

These awards apply to any college major or degree, and there are no limitations on the length of the program (i.e. one, two or four year program). However, an applicant must be considered a full-time student at an accredited college. These awards will be sent directly to each recipient. Eligibility includes one award per family per year. Any former applicant or scholarship winner can reapply for subsequent years.

Minnesota Division Scholarships

More than $3,000 in scholarships will be awarded to students at the University of Minnesota CFANS in St. Paul, and two $1,200 scholarships will be awarded at the University of Minnesota in Crookston. Recipients are chosen by the University as part of their normal scholarship selection process.

Mo-Kan Division Scholarships (Kansas and Northern Missouri)

The Mo-Kan Division of Midwest Dairy Association will be awarding (2) two $1000 and (8) eight $500 educational awards. Applicants who qualify include any producer who funds Midwest Dairy Association, the producer’s spouse, the producer’s children or grandchildren. The producer must have an active dairy operation as of January 1st of the year the scholarship will be awarded. The producer must reside in the Mo-Kan Division territory. Nebraska Division Scholarships

The Nebraska Division of Midwest Dairy Association will be awarding seven educational awards: one $1500 award for students studying in the dairy field, one $1000 award for students studying in the dairy field, and five $500 awards which apply to any college major or degree. Applicants who qualify include any producer who funds Midwest Dairy Association, the producer’s spouse, the producer’s children or grandchildren. Nebraska Dairy Ambassador

The Dairy Ambassador program is an educational and informational opportunity implemented by the Midwest Dairy Association (MDA) in conjunction with the Nebraska State Dairy Association (NSDA) and UNL Dairy Extension.  There are many educational and informational opportunities throughout the year to promote the dairy industry in Nebraska and educate consumers as well as students about the dairy industry and dairy products.

Objective: The objective of the dairy ambassador is to promote the Nebraska dairy industry and educate consumers and students in Nebraska.

How it works: The Dairy Ambassador position will run from February through February each year.  During this time, ambassadors will educate students and in some cases consumers about the dairy industry in Nebraska at programs such as Ag Literacy Festivals, Day at the Farm events, and any other events and educational opportunities that arise throughout the year.

Applications: Interested students should complete the application form and email it to Rod Johnson at RJohnson@MidwestDairy.com or mail to 6409 Tanglewood Ln, Lincoln, NE 68516 by 5:00 pm on January 15, 2017.  Applications will be reviewed and notices sent by January 25, 2017.

Scholarship information: A total of six Dairy Ambassador positions are available. After completing the requirements listed below, each ambassador will receive a $500 scholarship.

North Dakota Division Scholarships

One scholarship of $1000 will be awarded to a junior, non-graduating senior, or graduate student at the time of application and will attend NDSU during the 2015-16 school year. The recipient must be enrolled at North Dakota State University through the College of Human Development and Education. Selection is based upon academic accomplishment, leadership potential and commitment to health and wellness. Applicants seeking a graduate degree via the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GPIDEA) program must reside in the Midwest Dairy Council region which includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois.

Ozarks Division Scholarships (Arkansas, Southern Missouri, and Eastern Oklahoma)

The Ozarks Division of Midwest Dairy Association will be awarding four educational awards of $500 each. Applicants who qualify include any producer who funds Midwest Dairy Association, the producer’s spouse, the producer’s children or grandchildren. The producer must have an active dairy operation as of January 1st of the year the scholarship will be awarded. The producer must reside in Arkansas, Southern Missouri or Eastern Oklahoma. These awards apply to any college major or degree, and there are no limitations on the length of the program (i.e. 1-year, 2-year or 4-year program). However, an applicant must be considered a full-time student at an accredited college. These awards will be sent directly to each recipient. Eligibility includes one award per family per year. South Dakota Division Scholarships

Two $3,500 scholarships for upper class students and three $1,000 scholarships for incoming students are available annually for students majoring in Dairy Science at South Dakota State University in Brookings. The recipients shall be Dairy Science students who have demonstrated scholarship, need, leadership, and character. Preference will be given to students who are from South Dakota. When the scholarships are awarded there will be acknowledgment of contributions to the fund from South Dakota dairy farm families. The recipient of the Midwest Dairy Association Scholarship shall be selected by the Department of Dairy Science Scholarship Committee.

Dairy Management, Inc. Scholarships

National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDB) Undergraduate Scholarship Program
Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, an interest in a career in a dairy-related discipline, plus demonstrated leadership, initiative and integrity. Candidates are expected to complete an application form, submit a transcript of all college courses, and write a short statement describing their career aspirations, dairy-related activities and work experiences.

National Dairy Shrine Scholarship
(1st – $1,500; 2nd through 7th – $1,000 – Number of awards is dependent on number and quality of applicants). These scholarships are provided to encourage undergraduate sophomores and junior students to pursue careers in marketing of milk or dairy products. Major areas can include: Dairy Science, Animal Science, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Communications, Agricultural Education, General Education and Food and Nutrition. Awards are based on experience ability and interests in dairy/product marketing. Co-sponsored with Dairy Management Inc. Application Deadline is April 15.
