Nutrition and Dietetics Meeting Includes Farm Tour

April 2016 | 0 comments

In collaboration with the Minnesota Beef Council and Monsanto, Midwest Dairy Council hosted a beef and dairy farm tour for 17 Minnesota registered dietitian nutritionists the day prior to the Minnesota Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic’s annual conference. Participants included people working in retail and clinical settings, as well as in food manufacturing and private practice.

Regardless of the rainy Minnesota weather, attendees had a wonderful time learning about modern dairy farming at Krause Holsteins near Buffalo. Charles Krause showcased his farm’s milking parlor, bulk tank, free-stall barn and the calf barn that features automatic calf feeders. However, the highlight of the tour was when the group of nutrition experts experienced the birth of a new calf. Many questions were asked regarding antibiotic use, cow care and feeding practices. Check out the social media hashtag #dairygood to see the sharing done by attendees throughout the tour.

When the Academy’s meeting began the next day, Midwest Dairy sponsored the University of Minnesota’s Dr. Joanne Slavin for a presentation on the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). Throughout her talk, she kept dairy a part of the conversation showcasing the DGA’s continued support of three daily servings of dairy foods, and providing examples of its key importance in a healthy diet for adults and children.

Dr. Joanne Slavin is a wonderful champion for dairy, having grown up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. She is also a member of Midwest Dairy’s Scientific Advisory Council.
