  1. Break tough ends off asparagus spears and discard. Save a few asparagus tips for garnish. Chop remaining asparagus spears into 1-inch pieces. In a medium saucepan, bring chicken broth to a boil. Add asparagus and onion; return to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low; simmer until tender, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat. When cool enough to handle, purée asparagus mixture with an emersion blender or in a food processor until desired consistency. Return to saucepan.
  2. In a medium skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour, salt, and pepper, stirring constantly until mixture is smooth and thickens. Gradually whisk flour mixture into the asparagus purée over medium heat until well blended and soup is warm.
  3. Serve warm; garnish with reserved asparagus tips.
