Cheese sales were essentially flat (-0.2%) for 2017 year-to-date period through June vs. year ago. In Q2 2017, total cheese sales at retail returned to growth (+1.8%), substantially reversing the unusual losses seen in Q1.

The Q2 improvement in cheese sales was observed quite broadly. All regions, top varieties, forms and types (including processed  cheese) showed YTD improvement over Q1 measurement. This resulted in across the board YTD measurements through Q2 that showed either a moderation in losses or return to growth vs. Q1.

YTD, strongest growing forms included rounds (+4.6% and shreds (+2.3%). Among the top varieties, Colby/Jack blends (+1.8%), Cream Cheese (+1.5%) and Parmesan (+3.1%) are seeing the strongest growth.
