Six University of Iowa dietetic interns had the chance to visit a dairy farm as part of their community rotation. The visited Schanbacher Acres in Atkins to learn about dairy cow comfort, diet and the farm’s sustainability measures, all while walking among the dairy cows in the barn. Next, the dietetic interns saw the calves, a favorite for all of them. After the farm tour concluded, the dietetic interns went back to the University of Iowa Hospital to learn more about the nutrition of dairy, dairy’s role in the diet and the importance of registered dietitian nutritionists knowing where their food comes from.
Overall, the tour helped these dietetic interns better understand dairy, the safety measure in place to assure its wholesomeness, and that dairy is local. Helping dietetic students gain a more accurate understanding of dairy is important to the knowledge base they can apply in their work with future clients.
