Mayo Field was filled with dairy-themed fun on June 26 as the Rochester Honkers hosted their annual Dairy Night, giving fans an opportunity to learn about Minnesota’s dairy industry while enjoying an evening of baseball.
Throughout the game, each inning featured a dairy-themed event, including an ice cream scream contest, a Princess Kay interview, cheese stick giveaways, a hay bale toss, and the county dairy princesses leading fans in “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh-inning stretch. Honkers players also took the field in special Dairy Night-themed jerseys, showing their support for Minnesota’s dairy community.
One of the biggest attractions of the night was the cow milking competition in the fourth inning, where Honkers players faced the visiting team, the Thunder Bay Border Cats, in a head-to-head milking contest. With help from the Gochnauer family, who supplied the cows, the Honkers won the contest in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
The Gochnauer family has participated in Dairy Night at Mayo Field every year since 2020, bringing cows and calves to the ballpark to give fans a firsthand look at dairy farming and the opportunity to interact with the animals. They believe events like Dairy Night are important because they help connect people with where their food comes from while answering questions about the dairy industry.
The evening concluded with players enjoying fresh milk after the game, wrapping up a fun night that brought baseball and agriculture together while showcasing the importance of Minnesota’s dairy industry. Thanks to support from the Undeniably Dairy Grant, many of the evening’s educational activities were made possible, helping strengthen connections between consumers and Minnesota’s dairy farmers through fun, interactive experiences!
