In mid-August, the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation (ILLCF) and the Illinois Farmers Council hosted a La Plática (Talk) Roundtable session at the Illinois State Fair. The session offered a unique opportunity for associations, legislators, and agricultural leaders to connect, share perspectives, and discuss the issues shaping Illinois agriculture. This year’s event brought together Latino legislators and friends in agriculture for a lively and meaningful discussion.

Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II opened the session with an overview of agriculture’s vital role in the state economy. He also emphasized the importance of investing in programs like the Future Farmers of America to ensure the long-term strength and success of the agriculture industry.

Following updates from the Illinois Beef, Corn, and Pork Associations, visited the Dairy Building for a tour and the promise of a sweet treat. There, Illinois dairy farmer Brent Mueller of Marengo warmly welcomed the group. He shared insights about his farm, answered questions about dairy production, and noted that chocolate milk is his go-to recovery drink after a long day of work. Fellow dairy farmer Tony Graves of Clover Farms in Dundas joined in the conversation and addressed industry questions.

Representative Angelica Guerrero Cuellar (D-22nd District) added a personal touch, sharing her love of milk over coffee. She noted that when she spends time in Springfield for legislative sessions, it can be difficult to find milk, so she makes it a point to stock up during her stays. Her story highlighted the significance of dairy in everyday life.

The tour continued with a stop at the iconic Butter Cow, which this year carried the State Fair’s theme: “Adventure Awaits.” Guests were also excited to see several Latino cheeses and dips entered the Illinois Dairy Product Contest. A highlight of the competition was V&V Supremo Foods’ Chihuahua cheese, which earned the prestigious Grand Champion award.

The visit concluded on a delicious note as participants enjoyed the Flavor of the Fair Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough milkshakes, along with soft-serve ice cream cones, tying together a day filled with learning, conversation, and celebration of Illinois agriculture.
