“Lose the Lactose, Not the Taste” – Midwest Dairy brings clarity to Illinois WIC Conference.

At the end of April, more than 330 staff from the Illinois Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program gathered in Springfield for the annual Training and Education Conference. Among the attendees were registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), nurses, and other health professionals dedicated to supporting the nutritional needs of families across the state.

This year, Midwest Dairy was invited to join the conversation and address a common area of confusion: lactose intolerance and the role of lactose-free dairy. Many WIC professionals still question whether lactose-free products are real dairy.  Midwest Dairy provided science-based clarity and practical insights.

Midwest Dairy was one of three featured speakers in the popular session “Balancing Food Allergies and WIC Foods,” leading discussions focused on dairy’s unique nutritional benefits and its role in preventing chronic disease. Attendees learned that individuals with lactose intolerance can still enjoy dairy by choosing lactose-free or low-lactose options, many of which are included on Illinois WIC’s Approved Food List, such as lactose-free milk, natural cheese, and yogurt.

To bring the session to life, attendees sampled both whole and non-fat lactose-free milk, available during the sessions and in the Collaboration Hall. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Many participants were surprised by how delicious lactose-free milk tasted, and even more were surprised to learn that it’s still real cow’s milk, simply without the lactose.

The session’s impact was clear. A follow-up survey in the Collaboration Hall revealed strong support for dairy:

  • 56 of 59 participants agreed that “Dairy products are healthy and nutritious.”
  • 55 agreed that “Dairy provides a unique nutrient package that is hard to replace.”
  • 58 agreed “People with lactose intolerance or sensitivity can still enjoy dairy foods.”

This educational opportunity was a meaningful step toward dispelling myths, supporting WIC professionals, and empowering more families to feel confident in choosing lactose-free dairy.
